The trailer to Brawl in Cell Block 99 looks promising. You’ve got a bald Vince Vaughn punching the shit out of a car and also sporting the crucifix tattoo on the back of his head. It also appears he’s going to do time in prison for a drug deal gone bad.
Now normally, a Vince Vaughn movie would usually consist of comedies and Vaughn doing his schtick where he rambles on and on until he beats you in the head with the punch line of his joke, but lately Vaughn has been trying his hand at drama. Coming off of the second season of True Detective, which wasn’t bad but not as good as the first season (no fault to Vaughn) and also the Mel Gibson directed Hacksaw Ridge where he played a drill sergeant who was just as good if not better than R. Lee Ermey from Full Metal Jacket, Vaughn is acquitting himself nicely.
The director of Brawl, S. Craig Zahler has shown promise with his previous feature, Bone Tomahawk. He’s also filming Dragged Across Concrete with Vaughn and Mel Gibson(!) as two dirty cops who are under the spotlight for their strong armed tactics, so this guy is definitely someone to look forward to.
