What Baby Driver’s soundtrack tells us about the movie.

The Baby Driver soundtrack will tell you what the movie is about before you even see the it in theatres next week. The movie already looks retro-chic (aka: “retro-cool”) and the music is just that, featuring artists like The Beach Boys, Carla Thomas, Barry White, and — you get the point. Lots of “big-band” and bluesy sounds too. If you think of an older James Bond movie, it’s something like that.

There are some rock ballads thrown in as well — from artists, such as The Damned and Queen — that I’m sure give you an idea of what a high-speed chase scene will look like.

The first trailer didn’t give much away, but more of the movie’s tone and character were revealed in the featurette, “Baby Story” and the extended trailer. Obviously the movie is driven by the music.

From what we can tell, Baby is a bit old-fashioned — judging by his clothes, red driving-glove, and the fact that he still has an original iPod with cord-headphones. Though the movie seems like an addition to Drive starring Ryan Gosling, Baby Driver looks to have a completely different feel: ironically cheery, witty, faster-paced.

And, the fact that director Edgar Wright is behind it all says everything! He’s known for dark British comedies with great soundtracks, some of which include Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, but most importantly Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Like a hit Commodores song, the soundtrack — and predictably the movie also — is “easy like Sunday morning.”
