Big Screen Scoop: Scooping Makes Me Feel Good

THERE IS SOMETHING STRANGE IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD: MEN

ghostbusters

So it was announced that there was going to be another Ghostbusters and that it was going to be an all-female team, including Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy. You all remember that right, when you read about it for the very first time right here on Big Screen Scoop? Well, now it turns out that there’s also going to be an all-male Ghostbusters team, in a whole other Ghostbusters movie, and possibly Channing Tatum is going to be there? As Deadline reported, Sony Pictures has created an entire ‘Ghostcorps’ production company to come up with “branding opportunities” (ugh) for the Ghostbusters franchise, because I guess busting just makes them feel that good.

Tatum is not the only big-name looking to be involved in all this, as Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pierce, the Russo brothers, directors of a lot of great TV comedy (Arrested Development, Community) as well as Captain America: The Winter Soldier as well as old hands Ivan Reitman and Dan Ackroyd are all reportedly looking to get involved in this in one way or the other. Some might say that the all-male movie is a hasty response to backlash to the women team, and while that would be super disappointing, it seems unlikely. The whole Ghostcorps thing makes me think this has all been planned for some time and is yet another attempt to get in on that sweet ‘shared universe’ fun money. I have to ask though, are people that attached to Ghostbusters? I mean, that first movies pretty sweet, but how much Ghostbusting do you need in your life?

TIM BURTON, DUMB………O

You might need glasses like these after a night with the pink elephants on parade…

The recent live-action remakes of their classic properties seems like a can’t-miss idea for Disney-cast a few pretty actors, coast on recognised brand names, makes millions. Now Tim Burton, the man who helped start this trend by making the somehow-billion-dollar-grossing Alice In Wonderland, is back for another crack at an old Disney property with Dumbo.

Using a screenplay by Transformers writer Ehren Kruger and a mix of live-action and CGI, Burton will be bringing the classic elephant momma’s boy to life. And yes, of course it is the easiest of easy jokes, but every major character in Dumbo wore a silly hat and most of them had a silly voice, so let’s all laugh together as we ask who Johnny Depp will be playing. What hilarious jokers everybody everywhere is.

INSIDE THE INSIDE OUT

Although they have a 100% success rate at the box office and have never had an out and out ‘bad’ film, Pixar don’t quite have the ‘can do no wrong’ reputation that they used to. The descent into sequel-mania hasn’t helped that but in Inside Out, it looks as if they may be returning to form.

Phyllis Smith is an unlikely lead for a movie and yet here she is, alongside Amy Poehler as Sadness and Joy respectively, as they try to make their way back to the control centre of a young girl’s brain, while the remaining Fear, Anger and Disgust try to keep things under control. I have to imagine this happens to me fairly regularly, except Sadness is right there with the other three…um, anyway, this looks pretty good, and rides the feel-good wave of Boston’s ‘More Than A Feeling’. Inside Out will be out on June 19th.

I have a twitter, it is here. Do what you will with that information and check back in on Friday for more scoops.
