Segression are one of Australia’s true heavy metal institutions. Born in the mid 90s at the peak of nu-metal Segression rose to prominence in the local scene and with albums like “5th Of The 5th” and being able to support the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Slipknot, Pantera, Machine Head, Soulfly, Cradle of Filth, Fozzy, Strapping Young Lad and Fear Factory among others both nationally and internationally.

Through constant growth and lineup changes the band continually guided by front man Christ Rand continued to move forward into more heavier territory and eventually dropping the nu-metal influences completely leading to this their 6th studio album “Painted In Blood”

The album kicks off with the title track which really sets the tone for the whole album. The whole album has this real intense almost Pantera inspired groove metal inspired sound but they also manage to keep a lot of melody on the tracks too. Great balance between the melody and the heavy riffage.

The title track also tells the story of the album art created by the artist Dr Rev who paints using his own blood. The artwork used for the album cover is Dr Rev’s own self portrait.

Other stand out tracks on the album included the ultra heavy “Refused to React”, the thundering “Killing Kingdom”, the melodic “Scar Me Now” and the closing track “Burn This Ending”

This album is truly the band at their pinnacle and everything they’ve done has lead them to this point. There doesn’t feel like there is a single track out of place on the whole album.

I cannot recommend this album enough, all metal fans should go out and pick this up now.

So far its my pick for Australian album of the year
