Hirax are a band that you should know but you probably don’t. Originating in LA and coming up through the LA and San Francisco Thrash scene in the early 80s along side acts like Metallica, Slayer and Exodus but never quite hitting the same heights as those bands and getting some what lost a long side other thrash bands of that era like Forbidden, Vio-Lence and Heathen and after several line up changes ultimately breaking up in the late 80s.
Front man Katon W. De Pena then went on to reunite 2000 due to a huge fan response and underground cult following the band had gained over the years. Once Reuniting the band have gone on to release 2 successful studio albums, several spilt EPs, live albums and live DVD as well as gaining a huge following in South America and Europe with many successful tours.
After a few more line up shuffles the band has gone on to release a new album “Immortal Legacy” which is true Thrash Metal masterpiece. Managing to capture the classic 80s thrash sound but still sounding like it belongs a long side the current new generation of thrash bands who in turn could learn a thing or two from these guys
Front man De Pena’s voice is as strong as ever and tears through tracks like “ Hellion Rising”, “Tied to the Gallows Pole” and “Violence of Action” and there is two instrumental tracks “Earthshaker” and “Atlantis (Journey to Atlantis)” which really give the band an opportunity to shine musically and show of their talents.
“Immortal Legacy” is a kick ass pure Thrash Metal album that all fans of thrash will wanna check out. If your’e a Slayer fan, an Exodus fan, an Old School Metallica fan or a fan of the new era like Municipal Waste or Toxic Holocaust you are going to want to play this album loud and proud and maybe encourage you to go back and check out some excellent music you may have missed.
