Spring 2014 Anime Picks

spring 2014 anime - collage copy

It’s that time again. The anime season for the spring is here, and of course the anime minds of the Freakin Awesome Network are ready to make some predictions. Writers Glitch and Koda have set aside their sword fighting differences in order to help guide some of you who may have trouble picking what to see.

Koda’s picks:

Soul Eater Not

Soul Eater Not!
The prequel/spin-off series to the immensely popular and beloved Soul Eater franchise. This series takes place before the main series and features a different cast of students and teachers, though a few characters from the main series do make cameos. It’s being made by Bones, who rarely put out a sub-par anime series, and this show succeeding is probably the last chance Soul Eater fans have at seeing the main series get an anime remake that is more faithful to the manga, something I still see people wish for.

Mushi-Shi Zoku Shou

Mushi-Shi Zoku Shou
The sequel show to one of my all time favorite anime series. Mushi-Shi is an anthology series that follows Ginko, a Mushi-Shi, which means he is someone who can see Mushi, these weird creatures no one really knows about. The series follows Ginko as he travels across Japan helping those who encounter the Mushi.

Captain Earth

Captain Earth
Another series by Bones and is a mecha series. You can never have enough mecha anime in your life.

One Week Friends

One Week Friends
This series follows Yuki Hase, a high school student. Yuki notices that his classmate Kaori Fujiyama always seems to be alone, and so he decides to approach her and become acquaintances. She tells Yuki that every Monday she forgets all of her memories of her friends. In spite of this, Yuki tries to become Kaori’s friend each week.

Glitch’s picks:

Sidonia no kishi

Sidonia no kishi
Humanity is drifting through space as they face a mysterious, alien enemy. They must combat them using big robotic weapons. Unlike others in the mech genre, this one has darker tone and character designs. Along with interesting character designs. Let’s see how this turns out.

black bullet

Black Bullet
Mankind has been devastated by a parasitic virus, and must live within metal walls. Along with this are children born who can manipulate the virus. This looks like it will have some good action and good setting(because humanity trying not to die is always cool).

M3 ~ sono Kuroki hagane

M3 ~ sono Kuroki hagane
A distorted, black zone swallows everything around it, and eight boys and girls have to deal being connected to the zone. This is an interesting promise and will likely give us a unique plot. Hopefully this will turn out different from other shows.

Gokukoku no Brynhildr

Gokukoku no brynhildr
A story involving a high school boy who finds a girl who uses magic powers, and resembles someone from his childhood that died. This anime looks like it’ll be an unraveling mystery, and some character development. You got always love a good mystery.

And of course, our picks intersect sometimes. So here are our collective predictions.

Koda and Glitch picks:

selector infected WIXOSS

Selector Infected WIXOSS

Koda
A rather dark looking show about teen girls who play a children’s card game where the ultimate winner gets their wish granted. Directed by Takuya Sato, the director of the excellent Steins;Gate anime and written by Mari Okada, who has had writing credits on a laundry list of lauded anime series, including writing the screenplays for the first two seasons of the Rozen Maiden series. With such a pedigree behind this show, it could very well end up the Madoka Magica of card game anime.

Glitch
This show involves teen girls who are able to play a card game through battles in alternate dimensions. The winner gets a wish granted. This anime also seems have a slightly dark atmosphere. A unique take on the tired old card player genre.

kanojo ga flag o Oraretara
kanojo ga flag o Oraretara

Koda
What looks to be a harem show about a guy who can see “flags”, a term amongst visual novel and anime fans that refers to a form of foreshadowing, ie a death flag would mean that a character said or did something that blatantly foreshadows they will die. This premise reminds me a lot of Fall 2013’s My Mental Choices Are Completely Interfering With My School Romantic Comedy, which was also a harem show where the main character could see an aspect of visual novels, in this case the multiple choice questions that take you down different paths in these games.

Glitch
A young boy can see flags on top of others heads that predict the future. Along with four beautiful girls that suddenly take an interest in him. This seems like it might be in the harem vain, but might turn out interesting.

So that’s it for our picks for this season. These will hopefully help all of you out there make some wise choices in what to see (there are no refunds).
