EvilutionE5150 Album Review: MASON – “WARHEAD”

Mason are a 4 piece Melbourne based thrash metal band. Formed in 2007 and releasing their self title E.P. Mason have built a steady fan base and massive local presence through constant show on the local scene and playing along side the likes of Forbidden (USA), Blood Duster, King Parrot and Elm Street to just name a few. As well as their musicianship earning them a sponsorship from ESP Guitars.

The band has now released their debut full length album “Warhead”. Recorded with producer Ermin Hamidovic from “Systematic Productions” this album is a true thrash metal masterpiece.

The album kicks of with the instrumental track “Alarum” and then moves into the track “Imprisoned” which sets the tone for how the album is going to sound.

The band manage to combined old school trash metal with the best elements of the new wave of thrash which I’m honestly not that big a fan of generally but they really make it work well. There is also a bit of Pantera style groove thrown in on a few tracks as well which fits in places.

The musicianship is spot on from start to finish, the vocals are fantastic and include that classic thrash metal gang vocal chorus on a few tracks and the mixing and production of the album is crystal clear which makes a nice to some of the things I’ve listened recently.

Stand out tracks on this album are “The Ultimate Betrayal”, the southern style groove laden “Lost It All” which features a guest appearance from metal guitar guru Jeff Loomis, the frantic “Ways Of The Week” and the title track “Warhead”

“Warhead” is a must own for all true thrash metal fans and Mason will be a band to watch over the next few years as they have an extremely bright future in front of them and will hopefully play a big role within the recent resurgence of thrash metal as a genre.
