Dave the Dave’s Review Review: Lloyd in Space

Did anyone else notice the pure quality of cartoon that Disney was unleashing in the late 1990 period? These shows filled my Saturday mornings and some later on Toon Disney my lonely high school afternoons. The show “Lloyd in Space” was kind of a follow up to this successful string, and did fairly well for the short run it had. I had to read about this one and look up more clips than usual because I just didn’t remember much about it. Most of these shows from my childhood or even more recently, I know enough about to spit out some words. Maybe it speaks to the remarkableness of this show that I couldn’t draw anything from it. All I remembered was that all the voices were from “Recess” and the main character was mainly annoying. If I had a dime for every time that was a descriptor, I’d have one and a half dimes. Watch the last season of “Recess” and tell me that half isn’t deserved.

Right out of the gate, the first episode is a rehash of a “Recess” episode. It is about Lloyd turning 13 and in that old show, Mikey was 10. Not to rip on them too much. I mean the writers were the same people. Joe Ansolabehere and Paul Germain created one of my favorite cartoons ever. So I expected if they threw in some aliens, they could make a good run. Sadly they got really lazy about it. It was mainly just a normal preteen show. Think “Pepper Ann” but a boy and he has to deal with different kinds of new things protruding from his body. Zoom….I mean antennas.

This show ended up with 40 episodes. It had a weird stint where they stopped making episodes in 2003, yet the show was not cancelled until 2006. I’m not sure if Disney forgot about it or they waited for three years to hope that Lloyd buzz was going to boom. We’ll probably never know. I for one think it is due for a comeback, but I doubt Courtland Mead could do his little kid voice since he’s busy being a douchebag now.

I’m having trouble really getting traction. I started this idea, and I can’t really stop now. My motivation is hard to get because I’ve been listening to “WTF” with Marc Maron for about 5 days in a row and I can’t focus on a lame cartoon. I know it’s not fair of me to ask you to do so, but maybe you can. I’m going to turn it off, and really hit the rest of this hard. I feel comfortable telling everyone this because I do this for free. So my only obligation is to people reading this. So here we go. If you’ve been disappointed so far, get ready.

Lloyd is your basic alien boy. He has a bratty sister, and says the word junk a lot. His mom is a single mom and is super important. Eddie, Doug and Kurt are his pals, and they are in order, a human, a brain and a blob. Can you ask for better friends? Then of course his sister looks the same as him, but with dresses and dolls and what not. My favorite character is of course the janitor/repairman Boomer. He repairs all the spacecraft and is super down to earth. He is of course voiced by Diedrich Bader, who is awesome.

"Totally bro."

Like most shows, Lloyd and his gang are kind of dorks, and they are trying to get into the cool crowd. They actually are almost exactly the same characters as the geeks in “Freaks and Geeks,” but Bill is shaped more like Gordon Crisp. I know I’m making references to a lot of stuff here, but I’m expecting you to know all of it; unfair as it may be.

Okay, I’m sorry. I can’t do it. I managed to make up a decent thing about the show “H8R” and this show has defeated me. If just can’t give a crap. It’s just so run of the mill it’s sad. These men created a show that was about kids playing that made so many cool references and allusion. They had an episode where they made allusion to the Nazi regime for god sake. And then this show relied almost entirely on the premise to carry it, and they kind of stopped trying. They stopped, so I am too with this show.

Use this part of your body. Skip on past this show.
