Robert Rodriguez’s A Rebel Without a Crew comes to El Rey

25 years ago, director Robert Rodriguez made a movie about a Mexican folk singer who gets mistaken for a hit-man in Mexico. That movie was El Mariachi. The movie was made for $7,000 and made Rodriguez an instant legend.

25 years later he is giving 5 filmmakers the same shot. With the first episode premiering the Monday, March 19th, it introduces the filmmakers and what movies they’re wanting to make. Rodriguez makes an appearance and announces he will be making a film as well but will only be using $5,000 to make it.

The episode also gives them 15 minutes to pick a location for their films and puts them under that pressure to think quickly and stay on their toes. If this is the kinda tension we’ll be getting from the show, then for sure it’ll be nerve-wracking for us and the filmmakers. The show also gives off that making the band vibe that VH-1 did a while ago, so this should be entertaining for people that want to be filmmakers.

Rodriguez always finds a way to make things entertaining and this show seems like it’s heading there. And if indeed you are reading this and wanting to be a filmmaker, be sure to read Rodriguez’s book Rebel Without a Crew. Very good and eye opening.
