Trailer: Red Sparrow, definitely not a Black Widow movie so just let it go.

Synopsis: “Ballerina Dominika Egorova is recruited to ‘Sparrow School’ a Russian intelligence service where she is forced to use her body as a weapon. But her first mission, targeting a CIA agent, threatens to unravel the security of both nations.”

You know, for all nerd-bro’s out there already lol’ing themselves silly saying “Finally a Black Widow solo movie!” it is pretty telling that Johanssen has been portraying the character in various movies for eight years and Disney’s reluctance to give a woman a leading role in its superhero movies has basically become a punchline (hopefully Capt Marvel in 2019 will help a bit – even though it will have taken over a decade for it to happen for the Mouse house).

Anyway, Red Sparrow does feel a lot like what a Black Widow movie could’ve been like. This one is directed by Francis Lawrence who did some of the Hunger Games movies and the much-maligned but actually really enjoyable Keanu Reeves Constantine flick back in 2005, so at the very least it’ll look really damn good. Hearing Lawrence’s Russian accent is a bit on the Blood Diamond side when it first hits your ears, but maybe in context it’ll work better. Apparently this film passed from Aronofsky to Fincher and then on to the team of Lawrence & Lawrence. Trailer looks pretty fun though – kind of in that same neighborhood as Soderbergh’s Haywire but with more sex and heavier accents.
