Synopsis: “Local Pennsylvania polka legend Jan Lewan develops a plan to get rich that shocks his fans and lands him in jail.”
This is actually based on a true story about a polka legend who kinda accidentally finds himself running a Ponzi scheme. Similar to Wolf of Wall Street or I, Tonya, The Polka King looks like it approaches the “true story” with some artistic license – most def a good thing. Aside from Jack Black (who definitely works best in these smaller, less overtly goofy roles) we’ve also got indie-darling Jenny Slate, SNL standout Vanessa Bayer, JB Smoove (Curb Your Enthusiasm), Jackie Weaver (The Disaster Artist, Silver Linings Playbook) and Jason Schwartzman (like, every Wes Anderson film ever).
It’d be easy to write this one off as another “jack black comedy…” but this one is produced by Netflix (who does these small, weird comedic films so damn well – The Babysitter, The Incredible Jessica James) and Black has actually been pretty smart with his roles lately. Aside from the Kung Fu Panda stuff, he’s been mainly doing guest spots in random tv shows and his most recent film, Goosebumps, was pretty damn entertaining. And – to be honest – we’ll watch ANYTHING with Jenny Slate in it. With the recent trend of these comedic/fictionalized biopics on the rise, The Polka King is one to keep your eye on when it hits Netflix on Jan 12th.
