With all the rumored re-boots of Tales from the Crypt or The Twilight Zone constantly floating around, it seems like people have already forgotten that the sci-fi/horror anthological baton has already been passed to Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror. The British-American Netflix powerhouse is the current gold standard for sci-fi/horror on TV (even though it’s technically not on TV in the US) which can’t be that much of a surprise as Netflix is known for their originals going hard in the paint when it comes to genre shows, allowing it to surpass all of its cable-based competitors in terms of quality and overall effect on the pop culture landscape.
With the 4th season (or “series” as the Brits call them) on the horizon, here’s what we know so far…..
Of the six episodes for this season here’s what we know so far:
Ep 1 – Crocodile will be directed by John Hillcoat (director of the very under-rated Lawless, The Road & Triple 9)
Ep 2 – Arkangel will be directed by Jodie Foster (who directed eps of Orange is the New Black and House of Cards) and stars the amazing Rosemarie Dewitt. It appears to deal with the frightening possibility of truly controlling your children.
Ep 3 – Hang the DJ will be directed by Tim Van Patten (an extremely prolific dramatic TV director – Game of Thrones, Deadwood, the Wire) and features Peaky Blinders’ Joe Cole (John Shelby). This one looks a little more upbeat – relatively speaking about some kind of dating app that’s possibly a little TOO intelligent.
Ep 4- USS Callister will be directed by Toby Haynes (director of shows like Doctor Who, Sherlock) and looks like the most red herring of them all. On the surface it’s a straight-up Star Trek parody, but something about the way they treat the Captain makes me think this some kind of darkly comic punishment? Maybe a more light-hearted version of White Bear?
Ep 5 – Metalhead will be directed by David Slade. Slade’s had an interesting career. He directed Hard Candy – one of the best indie thrillers of all time – as well as 30 Days of Night and one of the Twilight movies. So…YMMV with this one, but Hard Candy was just SO damn good and this ep looks like it’ll be more along those lines in terms of the drama and action. A woman stuck in the countryside trying to avoid some kind of human hunting mechanical dog? I dunno for sure but looks brutal in that stark black and white though!
Ep 6 – Black Museum will be directed by Colm McCarthy whose done eps of Peaky fuckin’ Blinders and the feature film The Girl With All the Gifts. Of all the directors announced for this season, McCarthy was the one that got us most hyped. We covered this trailer in a previous article so check that out for the details on this one.
That’s all we go for now and the show hits Netflix at the end of December so between this, BRIGHT, and the new season of Peaky Blinders we’re going to be ringing in the new year glued to the television.
