Review: The neo-grindhouse classic Planet Terror for #FBF

October is right around the corner, so it’s time to bust out the scary movies. This week’s fbf goes to the first half of the Grindhouse double feature: Planet Terror.

If you don’t know, the movie is about a small town that’s infected by a gas that turns people into flesh eating monsters and it’s up to a small group of people to either get outta town or find the antidote.

The horror isn’t really there to scare the shit out of you, it’s supposed to make you feel like you’re having a great time at the movies with how each character gets offed. There’s even a part where a character gets her skull cleaned out. A “no brainer” as one of the characters calls it. And you also get a scene where one characters dick is melting off and has to “make it quick” before he’s turned into a eunuch.

Director Robert Rodriguez seems like he’s done his homework (probably watched a lot of these types of movies growing up) with this movie. He throws everything in there, the badass hero with a past, El Wrey, the sheriff (Michael Biehn) and his bumbling deputies, the BBQ restaurant owner (an awesome Jeff Fahey), the go go dancer (Rose McGowan) who winds up having a machine gun for a leg, psychotic baby-sitting twins and even Quentin Tarantino as a rapist soldier!

Yes, all these characters seem like they come from a cliché horror movie from the 70’s or 80’s, but that’s the point of this movie. It’s all supposed to be fun and not taken seriously.

So if you’re in the mood to watch a kick ass little movie that takes it back to Romero or Carpenter and not about characters giving boring monologues (yes, you Walking Dead) while killing zombies, then grab yourself a beer or whatever you do to relax and enjoy Planet Terror.
