The Shallows’ Jaume Collet-Serra directing Suicide Squad 2 might be deliciously dark & weird.

Sure, a lot of critics completely misunderstood Suicide Squad because they apparently wanted GotG (as evidenced by the seemingly endless references to Gunn’s excellent film in their reviews) but instead got something weird, violent and fun (and had some significant pacing/editing issues). For anyone who didn’t just want something directly out of the Marvel/Disney Official Styleguide™ it was actually a damn good film with immense re-watch value and contained characters that were actually cool and distinctive, instead of being largely homogeneous, snarky interchangeable pieces in Kevin Feige’s toybox.

Despite the assertion that critics and fans didn’t like this film, it made a big enough return from the box office to warrant a sequel (unless you’re one of the people who consider making $745MM on a $175MM budget a “colossal failure”). So there is clearly a demand for the film. Since David Ayer has apparently moved on to greener, more Netflix-ier, pastures the search for a new director is underway.

The number of directors allegedly in the running reads like a Suicide Squad dossier unto itself. Everyone from Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer to Mel Gibson have been in the running but the current top prospect is Jaume Collet-Serra who directed the completely slept-on horror flick The Shallows (seriously, The Shallows was the best thriller/horror film you foolishly ignored while it was in theaters) as well as a slew of non-Taken Liam Neeson action films.

This isn’t a bad choice if it happens. Collet-Serra has a good mix of horror, action and thriller under his belt that could coalesce nicely into a solid Suicide Squad flick provided they get a writer with a good ear for dialogue and character chemistry – a big part of what made Squad a banging ride.

Though personally, directors like the Hughes Brothers, Bong Joon-ho (Snowpiercer) or Sang-ho Yeon (Train to Busan) would be ideal to helm something as fun/weird/dark as a Suicide Squad film.
