Big Screen Scoop: Something Scooped In The Neighborhood

GHOSTBUSTERS ANIMATED MOVIE COMING, NO IT’S NOT GOING TO BE THE ONE WITH THE GORILLA

trgb01

At this point Sony are stuffing themselves with so many Ghostbusters projects that they’re not going to have any room for the dinner. The all-woman team reboot coming next summer appears to not only be joined soon by a boy-version starring Channing Tatum (Channing Tatum being the only thing Sony love more than green lighting Ghostbusters projects) but now also there are talks at the studio of producing an animated Ghostbusters too. So many Ghostbusters!

The Hollywood Reporter are the ones with the story and as they discuss, this all stems from the ‘Ghost Corps’, a kind of tell-us-how-to-make-money brain trust Sony set up that includes Ivan Reitman and Dan Aykroyd to turn their cool 30 year old movie into one of those ‘cinematic universes’ Sony craves more than anyything (except of course, becoming Mrs. Sony Tatum). I think we can all agree that busting makes us feel good and all that, but with the first step of the reboot not even out yet, are Sony jumping the gun a bit and overestimating the public’s goodwill towards Ghostbusters?

RONDA ROUSEY WANTS TO BE IN A MOVIE, DENY HER AT YOUR PERIL

Noted nerd and noted person who might find me and hurt me for saying that Ronda Rousey has been campaigning recently to play Carol Danvers in the forthcoming big screen Captain Marvel movie. It’s a little curious that Danvers hasn’t been cast yet, with other big name Phase 3 Marvel characters casted up and ready to go, but there’s still time for Rousey to throw her hat in the ring with other supposed possible Captain Marvels like Rebecca Ferguson and Emily Blunt. At a recent Q and A for Avengers: Age of Ultron (I hope 90% of questions were ‘seriously what were you doing with Black Widow?), Marvel bigwig Kevin Feige was asked about Rousey’s interest in the role, and responded the way he does to most questions; with boundless enthusiasm and absent answers. Sayeth Feige:

“I love it. That happens occasionally, and I think that’s a testament more to the strength of the characters. Going back to my early days at Marvel, there were always various people campaigning to be Wolverine. I guess that was pre-Twitter and pre-Internet days, but still for some reason would pop up in Wizard Magazine. Wizard Magazine would always have ‘this person wants to play this role!’ It’s a testament to how great the characters are that it appeals to such a wide range of talented, talented people.”

Maybe Marvel are just going to be coy forever and never actually announce a casting for Captain Marvel. Maybe they just cast Chris Pine as Carol and are too scared to admit it. Either way it’s hard to blame the likes of Rousey campaigning for roles like this, even if they’re usually unsuccessful. For the money and job security in the MCU I’d be campaigning too.
