Hailing from Melbourne comes Decimatus. Formed in 2010 Decimatus have managed to form a cult following from the combination of amazing live shows and with their brutal edged style of groove metal.

Having released 2 E.P.s and undergoing a line up change the band have now released their debut full length album Catalyst For Rage. Working with produce/engineer Julian Renzo the band have managed to forge a brutally heavy slab of hard hitting heavy metal.

Evolving the groove sound from the blueprint left by Pantera they have been able to combined it with the raw heavyness of Lamb Of God. The band have been able to forge a head with a sound that manages to wear its influences on its sleeve but in a way that doesn’t make it seem dated or a rehash. This album is a breath of fresh air and the approach to metal here is great because its fun and familiar while still original and different enough to make these guys stand head and shoulders above a lot of similar acts.

The album opens up with the title track and its a big fat chugging riff that hits on a groove and doesn’t relent. This is massive riff and it really sets the tone for the whole album. The riffs a think and really groove laden with plenty of that familiar chug that you’d get from a band like Machine Head. Front man Tommy Jennings vocals have that familiar bark that hit somewhere between Phil Anselmo and Fear Factory’s Burton C. Bell. The bottom end is really full on this as well with the bass a drums really filling out the mix.

Stand out tracks on the album include the blistering stop start chugging “One Foot In The Grave”, the straight forward and brutal “Usurper” and the closer “Death Sentence (With A Plan)”.

These guys are great examples of the sound that came out of what was referred to as bands that were labelled at the time “The New Wave Of America Metal”. The likes of Shadows Fall and Lamb Of God. They’ve taken that brutality and groove and pushed it to new heights giving it their own person spin.

If your a fan of that classic groove metal sound of the 90s like a Pantera or a Machine Head or a fan of the brutality Lamb Of God or post 2000 Testament then this album is definitely for you. This album is a massive step forward in the right direct for these guys and with a national and international tour on the horizon 2015 is going to be a huge year for these guys.

We’re just over 1 month into the year and I know this will be making my end of year top album list.
