Bloodbath the Swedish death metal super group was formed in 1998 and made up of members of such elite death metal bands as Opeth, Katatonia and Paradise Lost and taking their name from the Cancer track “Bloodbath” the band was formed with the simple quest to make straight forward death metal in the vein of classic Entombed combined with style of the Florida Death Metal scene. After the band lost front man Michael Akerfield in 2012 the band was joined by Paradise Lost front man Nick Holmes to record their fourth studio album “Grand Morbid Funeral”

“Grand Morbid Funeral” literally kicks off and kicks you hard in the face with the track “Let The Still Born Come To Me” and it perfectly sets the tone for the whole album. The guitars are raw and really have this dirty crunch sound behind the the tone. The drumming is unrelenting and Nick Holmes’ voice is raspy and has this fantastic howling growl like quality to it and which is a welcome change to the standard guttural sounds most death metal albums have.

Other highlights of the album include the ploddingly heavy “Anne”, The epic doom infused “Church Of The Vastitas”, “Mental Abortion” which has a very old school thrash metal vibe to it and the straight forward death metal sounding “His Infernal Necropsy”.

This album is a tour de force from start to finish. With the addition Nick Holmes to the band has breathed new life (or death) into this band. He fits into the band seemlessly. They sound so perfect together as a unit that its hard to imagine the band fronted by anyone else. It really proves this line up has a lot more to offer and hopeful this leads to many more albums of this caliber over the coming years.

All death metal fans will need to own this, definitely one of the highlights of a huge year of metal
