Summer 2014 Anime Picks

Summer PicksIt’s that time again. Another season, another crop of anime to watch. Local anime writers Koda and Glitch have once again teamed up to make their early picks of what you should be watching this season.

The Main Picks:

Sailor MoonPretty Guardian Sailor Moon Crystal

Glitch: Sailor Moon is back! Nuff said.
Koda: A new version of the first magical girl show that I, and many others, have ever seen. This time the art style looks more like the style of the manga.

Tokyo GhoulTokyo Ghoul

Glitch: A Tokyo haunted by supernatural entities known as “ghouls”, who devour humans. Some good horror with what looks like some big battle scenes thrown in. Let’s see if it all melds together well.
Koda: An interesting sounding horror series about a teenager that gets an organ transplant with the organs coming from a Ghoul, a human-looking creature that eats human flesh. This makes him half-human and half-Ghoul, meaning he has to start eating human flesh as well.

Zankyou no TerrorZankyou no Terror(Terror in Tokyo/Terror in Resonance)

Glitch: A horrific terrorist hits Tokyo, and those behind it is a clandestine organization….made up of two teenagers. As funny as that sounds, this looks like a very gritty thriller involving lots of mystery. An interesting premise and a great animation style to go with it.
Koda: The latest series from venerated anime director Shinichiro Watanabe is set in an alternate version of present day Tokyo, which is hit with a devastating terrorist attack. The only evidence about the attackers is a confusing video posted online. Unknown to everyone, though, is that the terrorists are a pair of teenage boys who apparently shouldn’t exist.

Glitch’s Picks:

Ai Mai MiAi Mai Mi: Mousou Catastrophe

It’s back! Three wannabe manga artists that get caught in weird and bizarre situations, instead of working on manga. One of my personal favorites, and it likes the humor and shifting art style from last season is well intact for its return.

Rail Wars!Rail Wars!

Action and comedy in an alternate world where Japan never privatized the railways. I look forward to see how this premise is made exciting(although preview already does that).

SabagebuSabagebu!

A middle school club of girls playing survival games. That right there should be enough to intrigue you. It looks like action is really gonna be good. Especially when you consider the very light hearted, comical look of the show.

Koda’s Picks:

Akame ga KillAkame ge Kill!

A skilled fighter from a poverty-stricken village heads to the Capital to earn money to help his village. Along the way he gets recruited into a group of assassins called Night Raid. This series is from White Fox, the studio behind the beloved Steins;Gate anime.

FreeFree! – Eternal Summer

I am a fan of sports anime and on top of that this is the second season to one of the more surprising series from last year.

And there you have it, the early picks for what anime you should be watching this Summer season.
